I’m launching a series of posts to help you enhance your profits using the Wyckoff Method. For those unfamiliar, Richard D. Wyckoff (1873–1934) is celebrated as one of the pioneers of technical analysis. While I won’t delve into his biography—there’s plenty available online—I will focus on breaking down the core principles of his approach to help you get started.

Introduction

The market is constantly evolving. Based on my experience, the Wyckoff Method proves particularly effective for metals and other commodities in today’s market conditions, even though Wyckoff originally concentrated on stocks. His approach is centered on understanding market dynamics through detailed supply and demand analysis.

This is achieved by studying price action, volume, and time. Below, you’ll find a schematic of his concept to help clarify these ideas.

As illustrated, the optimal time to go long is during the accumulation phase, whereas the ideal time to short is after the preparation for a price markdown.

Wyckoff Method – Laws

Law of supply and demand

The Law of Supply and Demand governs price direction and is a cornerstone of Wyckoff’s trading and investing methodology. Prices rise when demand exceeds supply and fall when supply outstrips demand. To identify these dynamics, examine real market volumes—whether in futures or stocks, rather than CFDs. By comparing price and volume bars over time, you can assess the balance between supply and demand.

Law of cause and effect

The Law of Cause and Effect assists traders and investors in setting price objectives by estimating the potential magnitude of a trend following a trading range. In Wyckoff’s framework, the “cause” is represented by the horizontal point count on a point-and-figure chart, while the “effect” is the price movement that follows this point count. Essentially, it reflects the degree of accumulation or distribution within a trading range and how this force translates into subsequent upward or downward price movements.

The law of effort vs result

The Law of Effort vs. Result offers early indications of potential trend reversals by highlighting divergences between volume and price. This principle suggests that when high-volume bars (indicating significant effort) occur with narrow price ranges, and the price fails to reach new highs (showing minimal result), it signals that major players may be unloading shares in preparation for a trend change. In essence, it helps identify when a strong effort is not producing the expected result, hinting at a possible shift in market direction.
