What details about yourself do you have online? In other words, what could people find out about you, and what would you rather they didn’t? Even if you initially think there’s not a lot out there, the fact is that there’s sure to be something – after all, if you’re of the generation that was one of the first to use social media, just think of all the things you posted without thinking about the consequences that might come about in years to come. We just didn’t know about the potential dangers. But even if you’re younger, it’s still so easy to let something slip or add some details somewhere that could cause problems. In either case, it’s not ideal.

So, going forward, it’s best to keep your details to yourself, and to keep that as a mantra for anything you do online. It can be hard to remember to keep all your details private sometimes, but understanding what it’s best to keep your details private online might help you stay motivated and be more vigilant. With that in mind, keep reading to find out more.

Protecting Your Personal Information

Perhaps the biggest and maybe the most important reason to keep your details private online is so you can protect your personal information. Remember there are people out there who would love to get their hands on your full name, address, social security number, phone number, banking details, and so on, and either sell them on or use them themselves for committing identity fraud or theft

If you can keep your details safe online and only ever input your essential details into trusted websites (if you’re shopping online, you’ll have to enter your name and address, for example, so it’s wise to check the site out to be sure it’s legitimate before you do), you’ll be able to protect your identity and money much more easily. When you limit how much personal information about you there is online, it reduces the chances of being caught out and all the many big problems that will come because of it.

Avoiding Being Targeted

Have you ever looked for something online and then found there were adverts for that exact thing everywhere you went? Those ads seem to follow you, and eventually they’ll either work and persuade you to buy whatever it was, or they’ll annoy you so much you’ll start to get frustrated (that’s especially the case if you actually made the purchase, so the ads are totally useless)! This is targeted advertising, and it works by collecting and analyzing the data you leave behind while you’re browsing online. Advertisers will say that sending out targeted ads is a good thing because it means you’re only seeing ads for things you actually want, helping you make a purchasing decision, but many users find that it’s intrusive and unsettling, to say the least.

If you can keep your details private online, perhaps by using incognito mode when you’re browsing or putting something in place to change IP address Windows 10 like a VPN, you’ll limit the amount of personal data available for targeted advertising, meaning you’ll stop getting to many annoying ads, and you’ll feel happier because you’re not being so manipulated by advertisers trying to persuade you to buy something from them before you’re ready.

Protecting Others

Your online interactions, whatever they might be, don’t always just affect you – they might affect your friends and family as well. Think about this: if you overshare about something happening in your life that involves someone else, or you give away sensitive information about someone without their consent, it can have a massively negative impact on a relationship, causing strain and problems that don’t need to exist.

Yes, it’s good to talk if there’s a problem, and yes, sometimes you can do that online on social media or various forums, but if you do feel it’s useful for you to do that and get advice, never use real names or any other details that could mean individuals can be identified because the results could be awful.

Instead, trying to maintain a good boundary between you and the online world, especially if it links to other people as well (but even if it doesn’t, it’s important), is vital, and it can save a lot of heartache and embarrassment. Plus, if you do need to talk to someone, you could try a therapist instead, as you’re guaranteed complete privacy and anonymity.
